SARRAT, ILOCOS NORTE — A 24-year-old domestic helper who worked in Brunei ran away from her employer whom her mother said maltreated her daughter.
Noralyn Ganasao said her daughter, April Lorenzo, a native of Barangay 22, married and has 3 kids, abruptly left her employer on Monday evening.
According to Lorenzo’s family, the victim is now under the custody of the Philippine Embassy in Brunei through the help of another Filipino worker. Authorities are working on an appropriate action.
Ganasao said she first received calls about Lorenzo’s situation from her daughter’s 3 other siblings who are also working in Brunei.
Ganasao was told that Lorenzo had not been paid the proper wages on time and that the employer doesn’t even allow Lorenzo to take days off.
“Talagang masungit daw ‘yung babae. Kapag may pagkakamali daw siya, siya ang pinag-iinitan,” Ganasao said.
(The woman was really rude. Whenever my daughter makes a mistake, the woman really scolds her.)
“Hindi pa siya binibigyan ng day-off. Sumasahod siya pero hindi ayon sa nakasaad sa pinirmahan niya,” Ganasao added.
(She has not been given a day-off yet. She earns money but it’s not the same with what is stated in the contract.)
A photo of Lorenzo and her situation was even posted and shared on Facebook by a concerned netizen with a caption asking help for the said Filipino worker.
