President Rodrigo Duterte on Thursday shrugged off Davao City Representative Paolo Duterte’s hint of a coup when members of the House of Representatives elect their Speaker on July 22.
Duterte on Monday announced that he was supporting Taguig Representative Alan Peter Cayetano’s speakership with the understanding that he would yield the position to another ally Marinduque Representative Lord Allan Velasco after a certain number of months.
However, Duterte’s son Paolo said on Thursday that there was still no speaker an election would still be held at the opening of the 18th Congress on July 22, the day President Duterte will deliver his fourth State of the Nation Address.
“Have you heard of wishful thinking?” Duterte told reporters when asked to comment on his eldest son’s remark.
Duterte expressed confidence that Cayetano would be able to muster enough votes to secure the speakership.
“He will,” the President said.
Paolo earlier endorsed fellow Davao City lawmaker and Duterte ally, Representative Isidro Ungab, to be the next Speaker. —Source: VIRGIL LOPEZ, GMA News NB
