DTI warns public vs. fake senior citizen discount cards

The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) in Pangasinan warned the public not to patronize the use and issuance of Senior Citizen Elderly Welfare (SCEW) cards which resemble the Senior Citizens ID card issued by the government.

Natalia Dalaten, officer-in-charge provincial director of DTI-Pangasinan, said people were made to believe that SCEW cards issued by the Senior Citizen and Elderly Welfare Club of the Philippines, Inc. may be used as discount cards and those who avail these cards may be entitled with benefits and privileges given to senior citizens under the law.

Dalaten added that an advisory issued by Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) earlier, advised the public to take precautionary measures in dealing with this club and not to believe in any of its representation to avoid being one of their victims.

“Those being issued with SCEW cards are made to believe that they could avail of the discount privileges with the use of the said cards and issued a fee of P350 to P600 per card to people aging 40 to 59 years old who are non-senior citizens,” Dalaten said.

Dalaten reiterated that only those Senior Citizen IDs issued by the Office of the Senior Citizen can avail the senior citizen discounts.

“Those with SCEW cards and non-senior citizen could not mandate business establishments to give them discounts unless these firms have an approved DTI or Food and Drug Administration sales promo permits,” she added.

Likewise, she encouraged the public to report to the SEC any operation of the said club at telephone numbers 818-6047 or visit their website at www.sec.gov.ph/wp or visit DTI Pangasinan at the 2nd Floor of Star Building, Arellano Street in Dagupan City or call at telephone numbers (075) 515-3183 or 529-6177 or send an e-mail at r01pangasinan@dti.gov.ph for additional information or inquiries.— Source: (AMB/EMSA/PIA Pangasinan)
