Senior Superintendent Wilben Mayor, director of the Benguet Provincial Police Office, said 35 of the fatalities died on the spot while five others succumbed to serious injuries they suffered at the hospital.

Mayor said the passenger bus, with license plate No. AVB 549 and body No. 801, was travelling along the national highway from Baguio City when the incident occurred at around 9:30 a.m.

John Patrick Flores, the bus conductor who survived the freak accident, said that upon reaching the descending portion of Naguilian Road in Barangay Banangan, he noticed that the driver, Romeo Subang Jr., had difficulty shifting the vehicle’s gear stick to low gear that caused the packed vehicle to go on full speed.

“According to the driver, it was a mechanical defect. He was trying to shift gear to slow down the vehicle but it would not work,” said Mayor in a phone interview.

“In the process, he lost control of the vehicle and then the accident happened,” Mayor added, noting that the driver might have faced difficulty controlling the vehicle since he was then negotiating a downhill zig-zag road.

The ill-fated bus then rammed an outdoor kitchen of a residential house on the opposite side of the road before plunging into the deep rocky ravine.

Rescuers from various police units in Region I, Baguio City, and Benguet immediately responded to the accident scene but they had difficulty retrieving the bodies of the victims because of the 75 degrees slope of the rocky ravine.

Mayor said 39 of the fatalities were already extricated and taken to various funeral homes.

As of 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Senior Inspector Leo Guay, chief of police of Sablang, Benguet, said the 41st fatality died in the hospital.

Mayor said the passenger bus had 49 people on board, including the driver and the conductor. And based on that figure, Mayor said all the victims are already accounted for.

Among the fatalities are Johnson Dimalanta, Rose Quinio, Nicole Quinio, Michael Quinio, Carantes Quinio, Alberto Anthony, Constantine Casugay, Verio Almasin,Amethyst Calado, Carlos Angeles, Glen Lostica, Joey Combes, Marlon Pelag, Pastora Daoey, Gabino Pilay, Pablito Dioanes, Roger Florida, and a certain Mr. Laigo. Other fatalities are still undergoing identification by their relatives while all their personal belongings were scattered all over the place and were being retrieved by the rescuers and law enforcers..
