

| Embassy Conducts Livelihood Training On Scented Candle Making And Therapeutic Hands-On Massage For OFWs In Brunei Darussalam |

The Philippine Embassy through the Philippine Overseas Labor Office (POLO) conducted a free livelihood training session on Scented Candle Making on 18 September 2011 and Therapeutic Hands-On Massage on 25 September 2011 for Filipino expatriates in Brunei at the chancery, located in the Diplomatic Enclave, Jalan Kebangsaan, Brunei Darussalam. This activity was sponsored by the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA), an attached agency of the Philippine Department of Labor and Employment, in support of the reintegration program of our government to provide the OFWs employability options for livelihood and income generating project upon their return in the Philippines. His Excellency Ambassador Nestor Z. Ochoa welcomed and expressed his appreciation to the participants for attending the said training. He thanked OWWA for taking this initiative to conduct the livelihood training and the resource speaker for sharing her skills and knowledge with OFWs. The livelihood training programs were aimed to equip the participants with new knowledge, skills and techniques on candle making and basic therapeutic treatment through massage.

The participants were also made aware of the growing demands for scented candles and the promising prospect of setting up their own business when they return to the Philippines. Ms. Visallie de Jesus Dayto, TESDA Accredited Instructor on Body Massage and Managing Director of Health Express Day Spa, in Kiulap, Bandar Seri Begawan, served as the resource speaker for the two (2) livelihood trainings.

Ms. Dayto demonstrated the basic steps in making candles and paraffin wax mixtures for treatment of hands to make it soft and smooth, followed by simple steps in thumb, finger and hand movement during hand massage. Likewise, the participants learned the techniques in relieving body pain and promoting health benefits through massage during the hands-on session. This training on therapeutic massage was a follow-up session to the body massage conducted in November 2009 and hand and foot reflexology on November 2010 for OFWs at the Philippine Embassy.

A total of 50 participants attended the livelihood training programs: fifteen (15) on candle making and thirty five (35) on therapeutic massage training. Welof Ramos encouraged OFWs and their dependents to attend future Philippine Embassy programs being offered free of charge, and to learn new and practical skills for starting a livelihood project, with a view to earning sustainable income upon their return to the Philippines.
