Accomplishment : Outreach And Briefing On Philippine Embassy’s Programs And Services To Ofws From Jollibee Brunei And Blessed The Nation (BTN) Berhad
Bandar Seri Begawan - The Philippine Embassy Brunei through the Philippine Overseas Labor Office (POLO recently visited Filipino workers in Jollibee Kiulap and acceded to the request of Blessed the Nation (BTN) Berhad Taglish Group for an orientation on POLO, OWWA, SSS and Pag-ibig programs and services.
The purpose of the visit/briefings was to provide OFWs with basic knowledge/updates on Philippine Embassy programs and services, particularly on labour and welfare services, and on-site POEA OEC and OWWA/SSS/Pag-ibig membership coverage. The said activity was part of the Embassy’s continuing effort to reach out to overseas Filipino workers and in the process promote better understanding and cooperation between and among the Philippine Embassy and OFWs in Brunei.
Labor Attaché Elizabeth O. Recio welcomed the participants led by Jollibee Manager Eriel Cortez and BTN Berhad Taglish Group Leader Mr. Leovy P. Camacho and Ms. Josephine M. Jasa in separate occasions.
The resource speakers on these briefing included Labor Attache Elizabeth O. Recio, Welfare Officer Zenaida S. Ramos, SSS Representative Marivic Rutor, and Pag-ibig Representative Arlina Feliciano.
•Labor Attaché Recio discussed POLO’s major programs and services, which included labor and welfare services for OFWs. She cited current Philippine policies on the deployment of Filipino workers, viz household service workers and skilled workers; the ban on direct hiring with certain exceptions; on-site verification/visits to companies; pre-qualification/accreditation needed for employment agencies; requirements for returning OFWs; and issuance of OECs, which facilitate exit from the Philippines and exempt OFWs from paying travel tax and airport fees. She likewise presented the principles/theories and practices on Personal Financial Management and the how and why of saving toward financial independence.
•Welfare Officer Ramos discussed the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) programs and benefits. These consisted of:
1.health care program designed to sustain medical rehabilitation and subsidized medical and hospitalization services as part of medical assistance to distressed OFW’s;
2.disability, dismemberment, and death benefits, which were on top of what was stipulated in the OFW’s employment contract;
3.education and training benefits, which entitled OFWs’ qualified dependents to 4 to 5 years baccalaureate scholarships, short-term or up to 2-years vocational or technical courses for OFWs and their dependents, and financial assistance to poor but deserving students or dependents of OFWS under the new OFW dependent scholarship, with a target of 1,250 scholars nationwide;
4.livelihood loan programs for OFWs who wanted to go into business; and
5.workers assistance and on-site programs such as reintegration program through skills training/livelihood, counseling services, conciliation of cases, healthcare concerns of OFWs (visit to sick OFWs in hospitals), assistance in the repatriation of distressed workers and human remains.
•SSS Representative Rutor updated the participants on Social Security System (SSS) program and benefits. She emphasized the need for members to continue paying their premium contributions, preferably up to 120 contributions, to qualify them for lifetime retirement pay plus year-end bonus.
She also discussed maternity, sickness, partial or total disability, death, and funeral benefits. Likewise, she mentioned various SSS loan packages and investment to their Flexi fund. She urged OFWs to continue paying their monthly contributions until the age of 60 years or 65 years old to continue enjoying these benefits and receive a pension to pay for their needs during old age.
•Pag-ibig Representative Feliciano discussed Philippine Republic Act 9679 requiring all overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) to join the Pag-IBIG and enjoy its benefits such as savings that will earn tax-free dividends, low interest housing loans, salary loans, and calamity loans for eligible members.
A total of one hundred two (102) overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) attended the orientation, with thirty nine (39) workers from Jollibee and sixty three (63) members from BTN Berhad Taglish group.They expressed appreciation to the Philippine Embassy for this orientation, which would enhance their understanding of the various labour policies of both the Philippines and Brunei Darussalam and enable them to work hard for their families and become worthy transients of the host country. --- Source: Philippine Embassy
